Developing the Nomination Process for unesco’s Transnational Silk Roads Heritage Route
UNESCO successfully developed and implemented a groundbreaking nomination process for its transnational Silk Roads Heritage Route, culminating in the inscription of two historic corridors on the World Heritage List. The first stretch, inscribed in 2014, encompassed 33 component sites across China, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, spanning 5,000 kilometers. A decade later, the second stretch, the Silk Roads: Zarafshan-Karakum Corridor, jointly submitted by Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, was inscribed in 2023. This achievement marked a significant evolution in UNESCO's approach to World Heritage, fostering collaboration among diverse nations with distinct languages and political landscapes. The process not only raised global awareness of shared cultural heritage but also set new standards for transnational nominations.
Silk Routes Reimagined: Tourism, Heritage Stewardship, and the Visitor Economy under the Belt and Road Initiative
Enhanced transport connectivity and policy coordination under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) significantly boost tourism and visitor economies along the Silk Roads, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the Zarafshan-Karakum Corridor. While these improvements increase arrivals, receipts, and itinerary diversity, they also intensify stewardship demands and risks such as environmental externalities and commodification. The study synthesizes institutional analyses and case signals from projects like the China–Laos Railway to highlight rapid demand growth alongside capacity pressures in fragile cultural sites. It advocates for rigorous governance standards, diversified markets, data-driven visitor management, and cross-border coordination to ensure inclusive, conservation-compatible growth. These findings align with UNESCO–ICOMOS guidance on sustainable tourism and community participation.
