The planning system in Italy and how it addresses tourism–related issues

Italy's planning system, particularly concerning UNESCO World Heritage Sites (WHS), effectively addresses tourism-related challenges while preserving cultural and natural landscapes. The country hosts 58 WHS, including eight cultural landscapes such as the Medici Villas and Gardens in Tuscany, which are integral to its identity. Italy's approach balances tourism development with conservation, leveraging legal protections like Article 9 of the Italian Constitution. This study examines how spatial planning mitigates tourism impacts while sustaining heritage values, offering insights for other destinations facing similar pressures.
