Late Scythian Necropolis Chervony Mayak: 10 Years of Exploration

A decade of archaeological exploration at the Late Scythian necropolis Chervony Mayak, near Beryslav district in Kherson region, Ukraine, has revealed a rich cultural and historical site dating from the late 2nd century BC to the first half of the 3rd century AD. The study uncovered 168 burials, including catacombs with multiple and single burials, niche graves, and rectangular or oval pits, accompanied by diverse grave goods such as Roman red-slip pottery, Scythian hand-made ceramics, gold earrings, bronze adornments, and items typical of Baltic Germanic cultures. The presence of Roman imported goods and fibulae provides precise dating for most graves, contributing significantly to the understanding of Late Scythian material culture and its interactions with neighboring societies during the 1st to mid-3rd century AD.
