Rethinking China's new great wall
China's extensive coastal seawall construction, aimed at protecting against storms and sea-level rise, poses significant threats to biodiversity in wetland ecosystems. A study published in Science reveals that these structures disrupt natural sediment dynamics and tidal flows, leading to habitat loss for migratory shorebirds and other species. Researchers analyzed data from 2005–2013 across 49 sites, combining remote sensing with field observations to assess the ecological impact of seawalls. The findings highlight a trade-off between coastal defense infrastructure and biodiversity conservation, urging reconsideration of current construction practices.

Local communities near the Mutianyu Great Wall generally view tourism positively, but their opinions vary based on the extent of their involvement and exposure to its impacts. While community members benefit from tourism with minimal input in decision-making processes, this study highlights significant differences in perceptions among groups, suggesting that deeper participation could enhance both heritage conservation and local development outcomes. The research employs qualitative methods to analyze these dynamics, offering insights into how community engagement can be better structured in Chinese heritage management contexts.
