Virtual Reality Experience and the Valorisation of Local Medieval Heritage: The Town of Cherven and the Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo
A virtual reality (VR) experience has been developed to vividly showcase the medieval heritage of the Ruse region, including the UNESCO World Heritage-listed rock-hewn churches of Ivanovo and the ancient town of Cherven. This innovative approach, spearheaded by the Rousse Regional Museum of History between 2021 and 2022, leverages VR technology to reinterpret over a century of archaeological research, offering an immersive way to valorize and preserve this significant cultural legacy. The project not only reconstructs historical landscapes but also integrates scientific findings, providing both educational and preservation value for the region's medieval heritage.
The Newly Opened Rock Church in the Ground Part of the Monastery Complex The Baptistery from the Ivanovo Rock-hewn Monasteries
A previously undocumented rock-hewn church, located at ground level within the Monastery Complex 'The Baptistery' of the Ivanovo Rock-hewn Monasteries, has been discovered and mapped for the first time. This unique temple features a carefully processed eastern half with distinctive architectural elements such as an absid, prosthetic niche, and a replica of the rock-hewn Vladish throne, providing new insights into its construction timeline, purpose, and monastic functions. The study, led by Evgeni Koev, employs detailed mapping and analysis to interpret the church's historical significance within the broader context of Ivanovo's rock-hewn religious sites.
