This era witnessed a synergistic fusion of Weimar Classicism—centered on aesthetic education and harmonious individual development—and Jena Romanticism, which emphasized art's role in philosophical truth and infinite expression through fragments. Together, these movements laid the aesthetic foundations for German modernity, reshaping philosophy, literature, and national identity. The study reveals how their interplay addressed Enlightenment rationalism and societal fragmentation, bequeathing a dialectical heritage that continues to define German culture.
Decentering Germany's Classical Center: Colonial Critique and Weimar Classicism
A critical reassessment of Germany's 'classical center' reveals that the era was not a unified cultural triumph but a fragmented and decentered period marked by intra-European conflicts, regional loyalties, and cosmopolitan aspirations. This study challenges the myth of German unity in culture preceding Napoleon's defeat, instead highlighting the complexities of identity and resistance within the Holy Roman Empire. It shifts focus from precolonial fantasies that laid groundwork for later imperialism to the efforts of German intellectuals to envision alternatives to the imperialist nation-state while critiquing Europe's global conquest. The research employs a comparative approach, analyzing regional conflicts, border dynamics, and intellectual critiques to decenter the narrative of classical Weimar.
Stadtgeschichten: Rumor, Gossip, and the Making of Classical Weimar
Rumor and gossip played a pivotal role in shaping Classical Weimar's cultural significance, acting as instrumental forces rather than obstacles. This study reveals how urban limitations in 18th-century Weimar facilitated the circulation of rumors and gossip, which helped negotiate tensions between the court and the town, elevating Weimar to national prominence.
