Ancient Mining and Metallurgy Activities in Mazayjan District, Fars Province
A comprehensive archaeological survey in the Mazayjan district of Bavanat, Fars Province, has uncovered evidence of extensive ancient mining and metallurgy activities, primarily focused on copper and iron extraction. Conducted in 2015, the study identified four ancient mines and four slag sites, dating from the Neolithic to late Islamic periods, revealing a sophisticated cycle of metalworking that significantly influenced local socio-economic structures and settlement formation. The research highlights surface mining techniques, such as tracking mineral lodes on the ground, which have altered the region's topography over time. This study underscores the importance of ancient mining heritage in Bavanat, emphasizing the need for targeted surveys to further document and protect these sites amid ongoing economic development.
A Newfound from Mansourabad Behbehan Based on Archaeological Surveys
An archaeological survey in the Mansourabad region of Behbehan, Iran, identified 55 previously unknown sites spanning from prehistory to the Late Islamic Period, with a notable concentration during the Middle Islamic Period. These sites include mounds, sherd/flint scatters, hill-top sites, caves, and standing structures such as shrines, water-mills, fortresses, and settlement structures. The survey, conducted in 2007 using GPS and random surface material collection, aimed to mitigate risks to ancient sites during seismic prospection by the Iranian Oil Company. The findings highlight the region's potential for tracking cultural interactions between Khuzestan and Fars, particularly in prehistoric times. This research contributes to a broader understanding of the Sassanid Archaeological Landscape of Fars Region, building on previous studies and ongoing systematic investigations.
