Astronomical Observatory as an identifier of the architectural ensemble of Kazan Imperial University

2021 — Conference paper — WHE283588B2F6

The Astronomical Observatory of Kazan Federal University, constructed between 1833 and 1837, serves as a defining element within the architectural ensemble of the former Kazan Imperial University. This study identifies the observatory's unique spatial planning, strategic urban placement, and pivotal role in advancing astronomical science in Kazan as key factors that establish its significance as an identifier of the university's ensemble. By applying the theory of identity in architecture and conducting a systematic analysis, the research demonstrates how one component can symbolically represent the broader architectural and academic identity of an institution. This finding contributes to the theoretical framework of architectural identity, highlighting the observatory's enduring cultural and scientific value within the UNESCO-listed site.
