Approaches to the Etruscan Landscape: the Development of the Tuscania Survey

2023 — Book chapter — WHEB37D47CE69

A systematic field survey of the Etruscan landscape around Tuscania reveals that understanding rural settlement patterns is crucial to unraveling the development of Etruscan urbanism, city-state territories, and socioeconomic systems. The study highlights the importance of field surveys in studying ancient Mediterranean landscapes but notes ongoing debates about optimal sampling and recording methods. Challenges include logistical constraints, such as the difficulty in obtaining permits for moving archaeological material within Italy, which complicates comprehensive analysis.
