Manipuri Dance in Santiniketan: Shaping the Pedagogy of Rabindranritya
Manipuri dance significantly influenced the development of Rabindranritya, a unique dance form shaped by Rabindranath Tagore at Santiniketan. The study reveals that Tagore's exposure to Manipuri dances during Vasantotsava in Tripura (1899) inspired him to integrate its graceful movements and devotion into his own artistic vision. This led to the incorporation of Manipuri dance pedagogy in Santiniketan, where it served as both an aesthetic practice and a physical exercise for boys, reflecting Tagore's innovative approach to blending cultural traditions with educational purposes.
Tagore's Santiniketan: Learning Associated with Life
Santiniketan, founded by Rabindranath Tagore, exemplifies a revolutionary approach to education that integrates learning with life. Unlike conventional educational models, Santiniketan's philosophy rejected rigid structures and curricula, instead emphasizing organic growth aligned with personal and societal development. This innovative model emerged from Tagore's belief that true education should be inseparable from lived experience, fostering creativity, holistic development, and a deep connection to nature. The institution evolved organically, reflecting Tagore's evolving thoughts and life experiences, rather than adhering to preconceived plans or external expectations.
Pollen Atlas of Santiniketan, West Bengal, with Reference to Aeropalynology
A comprehensive pollen atlas of Santiniketan, West Bengal, has been developed, providing detailed identification keys for airborne pollen grains from 101 angiospermic plant species across 40 families. The study reveals diverse pollen morphologies characterized by distinct aperture types (e.g., inaperturate, monoporate, triporate) and exine sculpturing patterns (e.g., echinate, reticulate, verrucate), alongside varied shapes ranging from prolate to oblate-spheroidal. This resource bridges aeropalynology with botanical identification, offering a robust tool for ecological and environmental studies in the region.
A Dialectic of Disinterested and Immersive Aesthetics: Santiniketan Art Education and Labour Translated
Art education can transform mundane tasks into meaningful experiences, even within the challenges posed by capitalism and industrialism. This study highlights the contrasting yet complementary approaches of Rabindranath Tagore and Nandalal Bose, two influential 20th-century Indian artist educators at Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan. While Tagore's relational aesthetics acknowledged the irredeemable nature of the mundane, Bose developed an immersive aesthetic rooted in Yogic and Far Eastern philosophies, envisioning the transformation of everyday labor through creative activity. The research explores how these dialectical perspectives on art education persist today, offering a framework for reimagining work and aesthetics in modern contexts.
Characterization of cyanobacteria isolated from biofilms on stone monuments at Santiniketan, India
Cyanobacterial biofilms on stone monuments at Santiniketan, India, exhibit unique characteristics distinct from temperate regions. Dominated by Scytonema and Tolypothrix, these biofilms also harbor 14 genera upon prolonged culture. The organisms produce high levels of scytonemin, mycosporine-like amino acids, and carotenoids, enhancing their survival in desiccated states with rapid revival upon rehydration. Heterocystous cyanobacteria demonstrate nitrogenase activity reactivation within 24 hours post-wetting, highlighting their resilience and ecological adaptability in tropical environments.
