The Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns: A Journey Through Ancient Thai Civilization
The Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, offers a unique glimpse into the rich history and architectural evolution of Thailand. This designation encompasses three distinct historical parks: Sukhothai Historical Park, Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park, and Si Satchanalai Historical Park. Each park preserves the remnants of the three principal cities that thrived during the 13th and 14th centuries under the Sukhothai Kingdom, considered the genesis of modern Thai kingdoms.
More to come…UNESCO Description of the World Heritage Site
Sukhothai was the capital of the first Kingdom of Siam in the 13th and 14th centuries. It has a number of fine monuments, illustrating the beginnings of Thai architecture. The great civilization which evolved in the Kingdom of Sukhothai absorbed numerous influences and ancient local traditions; the rapid assimilation of all these elements forged what is known as the 'Sukhothai style'.
