Delos: An Ancient Cosmopolitan Port in the Heart of the Cyclades

Delos, officially known as Dilos, is a minuscule yet historically significant island nestled within the Cyclades archipelago, situated just off the coast of Mykonos. With a mere surface area of 3.43 square kilometers (1.32 square miles), Delos stands as one of the most crucial mythological, historical, and archaeological sites in Greece. This ancient island has been the subject of extensive archaeological excavations, making it one of the most extensive digs in the Mediterranean region. Many of the artifacts unearthed during these excavations can be found at the Archaeological Museum of Delos and the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

UNESCO Description of the World Heritage Site

According to Greek mythology, Apollo was born on this tiny island in the Cyclades archipelago. Apollo's sanctuary attracted pilgrims from all over Greece and Delos was a prosperous trading port. The island bears traces of the succeeding civilizations in the Aegean world, from the 3rd millennium B.C. to the palaeochristian era. The archaeological site is exceptionally extensive and rich and conveys the image of a great cosmopolitan Mediterranean port.
